With the crisis in Kosovo deepening, and Serb forces embroiled in a bitter civil war with Albanian rebels, the political crisis in Belgrade became increasingly polarised. While many Serbs remained loyal to Milosevic, others began to question the ultra nationalist policies which had proved so costly to Yugoslavia. Pro-Milosevic protestors took to the streets, while the increasingly large opposition rallies were met with resistance by the police.
