Tsunami - After the Wave

The Tsunami waves which struck Sri Lanka on the 26th December 2004 resulted in more than thirty thousand people losing their lives. Tens of thousands of others who had lived on the coast were made homeless, leaving them to live in makeshift camps. The east coast was one of the hardest hit areas. An early and unseasonably severe monsoon further hindered relief efforts. The long standing conflict with the Tamil Tigers compounded the problems facing aid agencies, like Oxfam and the Red Cross, to deliver aid to remote displaced camps.
